M K Stalin, Tamil Nadu‘s Chief Minister, has launched an artificial intelligence-enabled panic button-cum-CCTV surveillance project in 500 Chennai buses. The state transport department will provide this service in about 2,500 buses under the Nirbhaya safe city project.

In the first phase, 500 buses in the metro city have been provided with four panic buttons, AI-enabled Mobile Network Video Recorder (MNVR) and three cameras each, respectively.

How it works

The MNVR will be connected to a cloud-based control centre through a 4G GSM SIM card. If someone feels discomfort or threat caused by fellow passengers during travel, they can press the panic button. This will raise an alarm at the control centre and produce a video recording of the incident on the bus. The operator can monitor the situation in real-time and decide on the next course of action as per a report. The control centre is linked to the distress response centre of the city police and the Greater Chennai Corporation.

This initiative will also help the workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation, the transport department and the police in detecting missing persons and identifying other criminals.
