Tamil Nadu’s information technology and digital services minister, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, announced in the state assembly that the government will roll out a high-speed internet plan offering 100 Mbps connectivity at ₹200 per month to households by the end of this year.

This initiative aims to enhance digital access across the state, particularly in rural areas. The plan is part of the Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation Limited’s (TANFINET) project, which involves laying 57,500 km of optical fibre to connect 12,525 villages with 1 Gbps bandwidth.

As of now, 93% of the work is complete, with 11,639 gram panchayats already connected. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year, significantly improving connectivity across rural areas.

“This initiative is seen as a vital step in ensuring social justice as high-speed internet access is crucial for educational purposes and equal access to knowledge, especially as educational resources and programmes are increasingly available online,” Rajan stated.

To facilitate last-mile connectivity, the government plans to introduce a franchisee model, similar to cable TV operators, to bring 100 Mbps connections to households. Additionally, 4,700 panchayats have applied for this last-mile connectivity.

In a move to create a top-tier digital ecosystem that meets global standards, the state also saw the inauguration of CtrlS Datacenters’ new data centre park in Chennai’s Ambattur Industrial Estate in February this year.

This month, Sify Technologies Limited also inaugurated its Chennai 02 data centre campus, claiming it to be “South India’s largest AI-ready data centre campus”.

The data centre campus was designed for a capacity of over 130 megawatts (MW) with a power density of eight to 25 kilowatts (kW) for air-cooled racks and up to 200 kW for liquid-cooled workloads.
