WhatsApp Launches an AI-Driven Feature ‘Writing Help’
WhatsApp has launched a new AI-driven feature named ‘Writing Help’ that allows users to rephrase, proofread, or alter the tone of their messages, as announced by the Meta-owned platform on August 28.
In a post on X, WhatsApp clarified that the new functionality utilises Meta’s private processing technology. This ensures that users can receive AI-generated suggestions without either Meta or WhatsApp accessing the original messages or the alterations made to them. Therefore, user privacy remains intact while using the tool.
“As always, we believe that you should be in control of your experience on WhatsApp. That’s why using Private Processing features like Writing Help and Message Summaries is optional and is off by default,” the company said in its blog.
WhatsApp has stated that this feature is entirely optional and will be turned off by default. Users must activate this feature in the settings to utilise it, granting them complete control.
Regarding availability, Meta has indicated that this feature will first roll out in English across the US and select countries. Meta plans to expand this feature to areas with additional language support later this year.

With the new update, WhatsApp users no longer need third-party apps like ChatGPT to enhance their messages. This feature, currently available in English in the US and a few other countries, will expand to more languages later this year.
Meta emphasises that tools like Writing Help and Message Summaries are optional and turned off by default, giving users control. The Message Summaries feature, launched in late June, provides quick summaries of unread messages in private chats without notifying others in the chat.
