OpenAI is Two Stages Shy of Hitting AGI

OpenAI has introduced new features to its Codex coding assistant, including an IDE extension, GitHub code reviews, cloud-to-local task handoff and an updated command-line interface (CLI). The updates, powered by GPT-5, are now available through ChatGPT plans.

The company announced the rollout in a series of posts on X. “Codex now runs in your IDE,” OpenAI Developers wrote, noting support for Visual Studio Code, Cursor and other forks. “It’s been a top feature request and we’re excited to hear what you think.”

Developers can now move coding tasks between the cloud and local environments without losing context. “Kick off new tasks, delegate in-progress work and review results without leaving your editor. Then continue tasks from the Codex web in your IDE to keep building locally,” the company explained.

For GitHub users, Codex can automatically review pull requests. According to OpenAI, the system “goes beyond static analysis—it checks a PR against its intent, reasons across the codebase and dependencies, and can run code to validate the behaviour of changes.”

Developers can configure it to auto-review new pull requests or tag Codex for assistance.

The Codex CLI has also been rebuilt to leverage GPT-5’s agentic coding capabilities. OpenAI said the redesign includes a new terminal interface and support for image inputs, message queuing, approval modes, to-do lists and web search.

The company emphasised that these changes are aimed at making Codex a more effective collaborator across workflows, from local development to code review and deployment.
