OpenAI Appoints Key Leads in India as Altman Plans Delhi Trip Next Month
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed on X that he will visit India next month. “AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch—ChatGPT users grew fourfold in the past year—and we are excited to invest much more in India,” he said.
This development comes after OpenAI announced that it will open its first office in India later this year in New Delhi, marking its official entry into the country. The company has already established a local entity and started hiring a dedicated team to strengthen partnerships with government, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
OpenAI has appointed Sheeladitya Mohanty as marketing lead and Akash Iyer as social lead for India.
Iyer, who previously spent nearly seven years at Netflix India in roles spanning films and series marketing, social marketing platform leadership, and brand management, confirmed his move on LinkedIn. Calling it “a meaningful moment,” Iyer said joining OpenAI was “a deep responsibility to… contribute to the mission of building AGI for the benefit of humanity.”
Mohanty announced her move to the company in a LinkedIn post, writing, “Excited to join OpenAI as the Marketing Lead for India and contribute to the mission of building AGI for the benefit of humanity.”
Mohanty previously spent almost ten years at Meta, leading marketing efforts for Meta AI and Facebook across the Asia-Pacific region. He has also worked with Microsoft and Nokia India in various roles.
