97% of iPhones Assembled in India Exported to the US: Reports
Snippet: Foxconn exported iPhones worth $3.2 billion from India between March and May.
Foxconn, one of Apple’s leading international contract manufacturers, has exported 97% of the iPhones assembled in India to the United States, reported Reuters on Friday. This marks a significant increase from the 50% of these exported to the US in 2024.
Reuters, citing custom data from commercial sources, said that Foxconn shipped iPhones worth $3.2 billion from India between March and May, making up 97% of the assembled devices.
According to the report, this is the first time that India’s exports are serving the US market almost exclusively, which is a change from the previous distribution to countries including the Netherlands, the UK, the Czech Republic, and others.
Apple’s plans to export a large number of iPhones from India stem from US President Donald Trump’s import tariff threat on China.
Last month, Trump issued a warning to the company, stating in a post on X that he had “long ago informed Tim Cook [CEO] of Apple” that devices sold in America must be made domestically, not in India or “anyplace else”.
“If that is not the case, a tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the US,” added Trump.
This was one of multiple warnings Trump issued to the company. Apple also assured that there would be no disruptions in its operations in India. In the company’s Q2 2025 earnings call, Cook said, “For the June quarter, we do expect the majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin.”
According to Bloomberg, Apple assembled iPhones worth $22 billion in the 12 months ending March in collaboration with contract manufacturers Foxconn and Tata. This represents a 60% increase from the previous year, and now, according to the sources cited by Bloomberg, Apple produces one in five iPhones in India.
A few months ago, in an attempt to prepare for the impending tariffs, Apple chartered cargo flights to transport 600 tonnes of iPhones from India to the United States, according to a Reuters report. The report also noted that Indian airport authorities reduced the customs clearance time from 30 hours to six hours for the six cargo aircraft carrying iPhones.
According to several analysts, if Apple were to manufacture iPhones in the US, the retail price would increase by 30% compared to if they were made in China. On the other hand, iPhones assembled in India would only lead to a 2% rise in the retail price.
