Tata Memorial Centre, GE HealthCare Partner to Launch Cancer Research & Innovation Centre
The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GE HealthCare Technologies on Wednesday to establish a new Cancer Research and Innovation Centre in India. This centre will focus on improving cancer care through clinical research, advanced technologies, and academic collaboration.
Under the partnership, GE HealthCare will serve as the technology partner, and TMC will be the clinical oncology partner. A Joint Working Group will be created to define key project areas and set a five-year roadmap for collaborative work.
The move comes as India faces rising cancer cases. According to the National Cancer Registry Programme, the number of cases is expected to increase by 12.8% in 2025 compared to 2020. Currently, around 100 people out of every 1 lakh are diagnosed with cancer in the country each year.
“The government is adopting a strategic, policy-driven approach to fight cancer with the establishment of day care centres, expansion of the cancer care ecosystem and promoting screenings and awareness programmes. However, early detection, equitable access, and preventive care remain a challenge,” Dr CS Pramesh, director of Tata Memorial Hospital, said.
Chaitanya Sarawate, president and CEO of GE HealthCare South Asia, said, “In India, the estimated number of incidences of cancer cases was more than 14 lakh in 2023. With oncology as a focus for us at GE HealthCare, globally, our innovations enable precision-led cancer care through an ecosystem of devices and digital solutions powered by AI.”
The collaboration will develop and test new technologies, including AI tools for medical imaging and clinical workflows, hardware and software for advanced image analysis, and digital platforms for health data management. The goal is to use these technologies to improve early detection, diagnosis, and personalised treatment options for cancer patients.
The partnership will also support research through well-annotated clinical data and help in developing enterprise applications that improve the overall management and delivery of cancer care.
