US Consulate Bengaluru

On January 17, the United States officially opened its consulate in Bengaluru. External affairs minister S. Jaishankar said the inauguration marked a significant step in strengthening India-U.S. relations, particularly in Karnataka’s role as a global technology hub.

Further highlighting the technological developments in the city, Jaishankar said, “Today, when we look at all the possibilities before us in an era of AI, EVs, space, and drones, our relationship will be heavily based on technology even more so than before,” said S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs, India.

This is the 12th foreign consulate in the city. The new consulate office will be located at the JW Marriott hotel on Vittal Mallya Road until it moves to a permanent facility.

US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, said that while visa services will not be available immediately, they are committed to bringing them back as soon as possible. “This consulate will play a pivotal role in fostering collaborations in commerce, science, technology, education, and culture,” he said.

A few days ago, it was announced that Spain would open a consulate in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru: The Tech Hub

“When I envision where we are going, our ties are going, our cooperation is going, I think Bengaluru has such an important place.”

At AIM’s AI conference Cypher 2024, Mohandas Pai, co-founder of Aarin Capital and former CFO and board member of Infosys, highlighted Bengaluru city’s tech hub and innovation, which is working closely with the US. Bangalore is closer to SFO than Delhi,” he said, highlighting the shared technological language and familiarity between these two major hubs.

With the rise of US visa applications in India, the appointment time is estimated to have crossed 500 days. The Bengaluru consulate will probably help reduce the load and expedite the process.

Speaking to AIM on the occasion of the consulate inauguration, Pai remarked that the consulate was meant to come to Bangalore much earlier, but it had failed due to a lack of political will. That said, he added that Bangalore, being the third largest aviation hub, will have multiple direct flights to the US.

“More than 3 million Indians work for American companies and deliver work to American firms. So having a US consulate here will ease the process of getting visas, and it will accelerate business connections,” Pai noted.
