Foreseeing doomsday with the rise of AI technology has been no alien concept when it comes to sci-fi movies. Man vs Machines, sentients or a dystopian world where technology has sent the world into catastrophe – every major incumbent disaster that can arise from AGI has been showcased one way or another.

These movies make us ponder the “what if” of things. Movies showing these concepts may depict situations which are sometimes real and sometimes hyped to unimaginable lengths, but, as viewers we can probably sit back and watch with a critical lens and enjoy the movie for the “science” element of it.

Here is a list of AGI movies you can catch on Amazon Prime Video this weekend.

Automata (2014)

Directed by Gabe Ibáñez, the movie is set in a future plagued by an environmental disaster, where an insurance investigator named Jacq, played by Antonio Banderas, begins to uncover a conspiracy involving robots known as Automata, which are more advanced and capable of independent thought than anyone had realized.

Battle Drone (2018)

Directed by Mitch Gould, the movie is set in a future world, where a group of mercenaries are hired to deliver weapons shipments for the US government where they are ambushed by soldier drones with advanced AI capabilities.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the movie is set 30 years after the events of the original Blade Runner. LAPD officer K, played by Ryan Gosling, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge society into chaos. He encounters the former Blade Runner, played by Harrison Ford, and uncovers a dark conspiracy involving advanced AI technology and the fate of humanity.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

Steven Spielberg’s 2001 movie is set in a future where human-like robots are common. The story follows David, an advanced robot boy, who is adopted by a couple to replace their comatose son. As David navigates a world where he is both loved and feared, he embarks on a journey to become a real boy. The film explores themes of love, loss, and the nature of humanity as well as the ethical implications of creating artificial life.

Terminator Genisys (2015)

Directed by Alan Taylor, the movie takes place in alternate timelines from that of the original Terminator movies. In this movie, John Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect Sarrah Connor but discovers that the past has been altered. Sarah is already protected by a reprogrammed Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and together they must stop Skynet and a new threat called Genisys.

RoboCop (2014)

A remake of the 1987 film by the same name, RoboCop is directed by José Padilha. The story is about a police officer, Alex Murphy, played by Joel Kinnaman, who is critically injured and transformed into a cyborg police officer with enhanced capabilities. RoboCop is programmed with a set of directives that govern his behavior, but he also demonstrates the ability to learn and adapt to new situations, indicating a level of AI autonomy. As he cleans up the streets of Detroit, he discovers that the corporation that created him has a hidden agenda and must fight back to take control of his own programming. The film explores themes of technology, morality, and the boundaries between man and machine.

Arrival (2016)

Another movie by Denis Villeneuve in this list, Arrival depicts the story of a linguistics professor Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, who is recruited by the US military to help communicate with aliens that have landed on Earth. As she learns their language and begins to communicate with them, Louise begins to experience vivid flashbacks that blur the line between past and present. The film explores themes of language, communication, perception, time, and nature of consciousness, which are often central to discussions about AGI and its potential implications.
