Top Executive Shakedowns In Major Tech Firms In 2021
2021 has been a game-changer for tech firms – they have been slowly recovering from the economic downturn caused by the COVID19 pandemic. This has left the organisational structure of many companies jostled. CEOs of major tech firms have decided to step down this year, triggering a reshuffling of top executives, with long-serving executives exiting the companies. On other occasions, the appointment of new CEOs has caused top executives to walk away from the company due to personal reasons. The CEOs need to bring about ‘fresh talent’ and ‘restructure the company’s organisational structure’ has been another reason for reshuffling. Here, we have curated the important reshufflings in the senior leadership of the top six tech firms.
Amazon
Amazon has witnessed major reshuffling in the year 2021. Jeff Bezos, who had built the company ground-up, stepped down from the CEO position on July 5, 2021. He is succeeded by Andy Jassy, the head of Amazon Web Services. The re-appointment took place in the third quarter of the financial year to ensure a smooth transition. In addition, Tableau CEO Adam Selipsky has been appointed as the head of Amazon Web Services, replacing Andy Jassy. Since Jassy’s appointment, a leaked Amazon Web Services email revealed that Cloud Executive Charlie Bell, who had served Amazon for 23 years, has departed from the company.
Twitter Inc. has had a tumultuous end to the year with Jack Dorsey resigning from his role as the company’s CEO. Parag Agrawal has been unanimously appointed by the board as the CEO in his place. In addition, Bret Taylor, a long-serving member of the board, has also been promoted to board chair. Agrawal has made leading contributions in the field of ML-powered cropping algorithms. Agrawal has also played a key role in adopting Responsible ML as part of Twitter’s priorities. Agrawal had further jostled management ranks when Design Head Dantley Davis and Engineering lead Michael Monato resigned from the company. Agrawal also promoted three other Twitter Executives to the position of “general manager.”
Intel
Intel announced that in February 2021, Intel CEO, Bob Swan, would step down and be replaced by industry leader Pat Gelsinger, who has been leading VMware for nearly nine years. Gelsinger has had over 30 years of experience at Intel, where he began his career, and has been responsible for shaking up leadership and restructuring the organisation. Under his leadership, Intel Vice President Navin Shenoy has resigned from the company. Furthermore, Intel hired VMware executive Greg Lavender as chief technology officer.
Google has seen many new appointments this year. Google hired its new AI lead
Dr Marian Croak to oversee Google’s research department on responsible AI. Before this, Croak was heading the company’s engineering division as a Vice President. She manages the teams working on artificial intelligence for social good, algorithmic fairness, and AI ethics and reports to the SVP of Google AI Research and Health.
Croak’s appointment was also a point of departure for Margaret Mitchel, ex AI ethics researcher at Google. It has been speculated that Mitchel was fired as she was vocal about the downsides of AI.
Google Cloud also appointed a new leader for business in India. Bikram Singh Bedi was appointed managing director of Indian business, prior to which Bedi worked as head of AWS business in India and South Asia for about six years.
VMware
With Pat Gelsinger going over to Intel, VMware appointed long time executive Rangarajan (Raghu) Raghuram as the new Chief Executive Officer of the company. This brought about an executive shakeup with Sanjay Poonen, chief operating officer of customer operations, leaving VMware after seven years. In addition, the company was also deserted by 5 top executives in the interim period when Zane Rowe was in charge of operations. VMware’s Telco and Edge Cloud business head, Shekar Ayyar, Global Chief Operating Officer of Products and Cloud Services Rajiv Ramaswami, Vice president of VMware’s Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) business, John Lens, President and General Manager of VMware Japan, Jon Robertson; all exited the company after serving long tenures.
Alibaba
Alibaba plans to have a reshuffle of its organisational structure to adopt a ‘diversified business governance’ strategy. For this purpose, CEO Daniel Zhang has made plans to replace CFO Maggie Wu with the company’s deputy chief financial officer, Toby Xu, next April. Zhang has justified the move as the company’s way of making way for a new generation of talent. Additionally, Trudy Dai will head up a new unit for China digital commerce that will combine the company’s wholesale and consumer-facing marketplaces.
